Critical Care National  Working Group On Costing

The aim of the Cost Block Programme

The aim of the Cost Block Programme is to compare resource use between Critical Care Units in the UK. This is achieved by collecting retrospective annual cost data from participating hospitals using a standard questionnaire developed by the Critical Care National Working Group on Costing. It has been recommended in the Department of Health report ‘Comprehensive Critical Care’ (1) that all units are encouraged to take part in the Cost Block Programme.

Data relating to the resource use of the major items of capital equipment in each unit is also being collected in this round of data collection.

By collecting cost data within these areas of resource use on an annual basis, it is possible to predict the financial impact of a change in nursing skill mix, or the cost of expanding Critical Care facilities. The collection of Cost Block data facilitates inter-unit cost comparisons and has the potential for the benchmarking of resource use.
